Happy 100th Birthday, Roald Dahl!

What a wonderful week we have had! We've been busy at work, but we did have time to celebrate one of our student's birthdays! :)

Take a look at what we've been up to:

ELA:

Making Meaning: We have been reading Aunt Flossie's Hats (And Crab Cakes Later). In this book, two girls, Sarah and Susan, visit their Aunt Flossie's house and have fun trying on her hats. Each hat that they try on brings back memories for Aunt Flossie that she shares through her stories. For this week's unit, we have continued working on visualization. The students were assigned to listen to the words in the text and create their own drawings that were based on their own visualizations. We later compared them to the illustrator's drawings.

Writing: This week we worked on letter writing. Since it would have been Roald Dahl's 100th birthday on September 13th, we wrote him letters to wish him a happy birthday! Students were taught how to include the date, a salutation, well-written content, a closing and a signature. These will be useful skills to have for the rest of their lives.

We are currently reading: Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

Math:

We have wrapped up our unit on Number Sense and we have moved on to Multiplication. We will start by learning arrays and then move on to drawing pictures of equal groups, hopping on a number line, repeated addition and skip counting. These are all great ways to form a foundation for multiplication. With that said, it is also imperative that students become fluent with their math facts so please be practicing at home.

Below is a chart to help everyone understand the multiplication strategies that we will be using:

Science:

This week we have finished Chapter 2! And.... our class average for our test was a 96% - Woohoo!! :)

Next week, we will move on to Chapter 3 - Animal and Plant Adaptations. This will be a short chapter that we will test on in two weeks.

Also, a quick shout-out to our winning Jeopardy team. Good job, guys!!

Social Studies:

We are finally going to begin Social Studies. This will overlap with Science for about a week. We will first review map skills. You should start seeing content coming home on this next week.

Table Topics:

Q: What was your favorite "Hat Story" that was told in the book Aunt Flossie's Hats (And Crab Cakes Later)

A: The fire in Baltimore, The parade, or Aunt Flossie losing her hat in the lake

Q: After reading your Scholastic News Magazine, you wrote an opinion piece on whether you think class participation should or should not be taken for a grade. What side did you choose? Why?

A: Answers may vary.

Q: What facts have you learned about Roald Dahl since reading the book Who Was Roald Dahl?

A: Answers may vary. We have learned many!!

It has been a great week but I think we're all ready for a restful weekend. :)

Have a great time spending it with the kids this weekend!

Go Dawgs!
