The End To A Productive Week

We have had a great week! I think we're finally getting into the routine of our day, which is making everything run nice and smooth.
Take a look at this week's highlights:
ELA:
Making Meaning: We read the book Two Bobbies this week which is about a dog and a cat that survived Hurricane Katrina. The students loved that it was based off a true story! We discussed story elements (characters, setting, problem, solution), as well as inferring by looking at illustrations within the book.
Being A Writer: We began looking at poetry. This week we focused on Acrostic poems. During this exercise, we discussed and practiced using a dictionary to find words.

We also wrapped up learning about multiple-meaning words. We split into groups and performed plays to help reinforce this skill.

Our current read-aloud: Soupy Saturdays With The Pain And The Great One by: Judy Blume
Math:
- We have been working on addition w/ regrouping and subtraction w/ regrouping. We have been modeling this by looking at a "Hundreds Chart". We have also been learning how to do this the "Old-Fashioned Way". ;) Both ways are completely acceptable to use on assignments and assessments.
- We have also been moving forward with our multiplication times tests. More than half of our class have passed their 2s. Woohoo! We even have one student on their 4s! Please remember to be practicing math facts at home with your children.

Science:
- We have officially wrapped up Chapter 1 in science. We have enjoyed learning about the parts and functions of plants. However... I think the kids are excited to move on to Chapter 2: Animals! In this chapter we will learn about groups of animals: reptiles, mammals, amphibians, etc.
- Our test for Chapter 2 science will be in two weeks. I will send out a study guide this coming week with an exact date of the test.
Table Topics:
Q: In Making Meaning and Being A Writer, how are you supposed to present yourself when talking to your partner. Does your partner act that way to you? Are you excited or sad to get a new partner next week?
A. Turn your body towards your partner, give them eye-contact, them let have a turn to talk, etc.
Q: What was your multiple-meaning play about? What character did you get to act out?
A: Answers may vary.
Q: What words did you use to describe yourself in your acrostic poem? Did you learn a new word from the dictionary that you were able to use?

Q: Did your team when in Science Jeopardy? Were you able to contribute any answers to your team?
A: Answers may vary.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a wonderful weekend!
